Zwitterionic polymers are classical antifouling but they require specialized monomers that have cationic and anionic charges integrated into a single monomer. Herein, we show pseudo-zwitterionic copolymers synthesized from mixture of 2 each having opposite polarity has excellent antibiofilm efficacy. We discovered new mixed-charge copolymer brush (#1-A) oppositely charged monomers, the SPM (3-Sulfopropyl methacrylate) AMPTMA ((3-Acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride), achieves broad spectrum in vitro effect greater than 99% reductions against all six Gram-positive Gram-negative bacteria tested. In murine subcutaneous wound catheter infection models, #1-A good long-term anti-biofilm efficacy MRSA Pseudomonas aeruginosa 3.41 3.19 orders respectively, outperforming previous coatings. method to choose cationic/anionic pair combination form best coating by exploiting solution polymerization kinetics disparity between monomers. also showed is softer higher hydration zwitterionic polymer.
